I spent about $15 for a stamp one time, I can't even imagine spending more than that. I know a few people who have spent a couple grand on stamps before, but hey if you are a collector and have the budget to do so then why not!
As most of my collection was acquired when I was young, I haven't spent more than a couple of dollars on an individual stamp. Even as an adult, i can't imagine spending a huge amount on a stamp unless it was the final one to complete a specific collection - and even then I would probably give my head a shake. For me this is a hobby and not on obsession (at least not yet).
I spend on completing series and specials. I have a number of collections and am now starting to fill in the pre- Scott # 200 spaces. Recently bought some teens and 20's, used, F-VF varieties so will let you 'do the math'. My goal is to get them all to a specific collectible and resellable point and then sell everything to get some one thing that doesn't take up so much space!!
I did spend some little bit but not a lot considering many factors. Knowing the feeling about price guides in other threads, but using the Scott price list (which in some circles is relevant) I spent anywhere from 10% to no more than 30% of SCV, mainly on stamps with less than a 300 Scott number. I was surprised by how inexpensive some of the bids were but you have to figure: people are spending on Christmas and not on stamps right now and some of the sellers are having 'fire sales' on some of their inventory to get money for the same reason (spend on Christmas)... and so there are a LOT of decent deals out there right now. Unfortunately, a lot of the older dealers are getting out of the business as well due to the lack of 'traffic' with the younger folks... so they are selling for what they can get. This is one season I go exploring to see what is out there. Best to you...
It is nice to know that the Christmas season is a good season to look for good deals online for stamps.
I made an error once with a payment on paypal in dollars and the stamp that is now worthless cost me $200 instead of $20 and this is the most I have spent especially on something so worthless!
That was a big amount. Have you filed dispute to Paypal? They can refund your money in cases like that if proven you are right.
I agree with Zee (ALWAYS wanted to say that!!!)... PayPal belongs to eBay and they don't want bad press. If you put forth a complaint, there is a good chance someone will look into it and give some type of relief, especially if you can go back to the original listing and show historical cost. Good luck... I have been burned before on similar deals and hate it for someone else, especially when we are trying to 'play nice'.
I did this ages ago and yes I definitely disputed the error which was corrected after about two months. Thank goodness because I was in absolute shock and tears after that amount was taken out of my account. Luckily now I take it slow and triple check everything I do before dealing with sending money.
Good thing that it was refunded or returned to your account. Right that better to triple check everything before dealing online even offline.
Yes absolutely! I have certainly learned my lesson when it comes to these things! I love buying things online as you find so many unusual items.
I usually troll the auctions a couple of times a week just to see what is out there. Some of what I buy I do so because I know I will trade it later; others I buy for my own collections. But just 'window shopping' takes my mind away from the every day hum-drum of "get up, go to work, come home, go to bed". But again: best to develop a relationship with traders and sellers you learn to trust; THEIR eyes become yours if you let them know what you want.
