What is the ugliest stamp you've seen?

I enjoy cartoon art and would avidly collect those stamps if they passed my mailbox. Whether I would spend money to buy new issue stamps that presented cartoon art is quite another matter. I remember buying these stamps back in the '90's. Interested to know if anyone considers these "ugly".

I wouldn't put them in the "uglies" category. They're just caricatures, all recognizable to those of the generation they represent, and I like the colors used. The US newspaper "funnies" stamps a few years back were also attractive to me and I liked receiving them on my mail. Like Hochstrasse, however, I didn't add any of the cartoon stamps to my collection.

The Lon Chaney stamp looks the least attractive on that set.
But still like you guys, I can appreciate these kind of arts and would love to received some on my mails. :p

    Interesting item Zararina!

That is a propaganda stamp printed by Great Britain's Office of Strategic Services. It's my understanding that the "Futches" is a play on words for "Deutches" which means destroyed or defeated. According to this link these stamps were included in propaganda mail dropped into Germany toward the close of WW II. See this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cornflakes

I would like to have an example of this stamp, along with the counterfeit 6 pf and 12 pf stamps printed by the OSS, especially if I could find one of the skull stamps tied on cover.

Hochstrasse, I believe you collect Germany. Do you have the counterfeit and skull stamps in you collection? Any of them on cover with the propaganda letters?

I do have some stamps from Germany but I do not have that stamp in particular. :)

My perception of ugly has changed quite a bit as my philatelic knowledge increased. As a 3rd grader, ugly was a heavy cancel, and now its a ruined stamp.

The U.S. and British were not the only ones forging postage stamps for propaganda during WW II. Here's an example of a German counterpart:

It's an alteration of Sc 226, the 1/2 pence Silver Jubilee Issue with Stalin's head replacing that of King George V, and the date 1939-1944 instead of 1910-1935 on the original. Note also the star of Solomon in the upper corners and the misspelling of JEWISH (JEWSH) on the bottom.

I saw this listed on eBay, see:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/This-War-is...83?pt=Stamps_World_Stamps&hash=item4d246af54f

    and

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/KGVI-WWII-M...t=UK_Stamps_BritishStamps&hash=item41869fed33

Interesting items, but too pricy for me.

Yeah, I think this stamp qualifies as "ugly". There's nothing redeeming about what it stands for. You're right about being too pricy. I find the propaganda stuff really interesting also, but thus far I have resisted collecting any of it and stayed with legitimate postage issues.

    Right it's interesting.
But I do not like forged stamps or the propaganda on it. :p
