Not all stamps are attractive are they? Sometimes ones you need to collect to make your collection complete are not necessarily ones you would otherwise want to save. So let's see what members think is their ugliest stamp?
Not sure where they were from, but I saw some stamps with Michael Jackson on, he was not pretty, but the stamps made him look like Frankenstein's Monster. Or perhaps it was Frankenstein's Monster and I mistook him for Michael Jackson!
I have considered the "Bright Eyes" issues of the USPS some of the ugliest stamps. Here is a sample: http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=A2KJke2guotRZDwAUMyjzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBpaWt1dXN1BHNlYwNmcC1leHAEc2xrA2V4cA--?back=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3D%2522bright%2Beyes%2522%2Bpostage%2Bstamps%26fr%3Dyfp-t-900-1&w=600&h=380&imgurl=www.usapostagestamps.com%2Fimages%2Fimage.php%3Fcontent_id%3D2851&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.usapostagestamps.com%2Fcs%2Ftop_rated%2Foverall%2F2851%2FDog%252C%2BBright%2BEyes%2BIssue%2B32c.%2B1998%2F&size=24.4KB&name=Commemorative+%3Cb%3EStamps%3C%2Fb%3E%3A+Dog%2C+%3Cb%3EBright+Eyes+%3C%2Fb%3EIssue+32c.+1998&p=%22bright+eyes%22+postage+stamps&oid=8e3ed35c8308e048e41fb87aea41529d&fr2=&fr=&tt=Commemorative+%3Cb%3EStamps%3C%2Fb%3E%3A+Dog%2C+%3Cb%3EBright+Eyes+%3C%2Fb%3EIssue+32c.+1998&b=0&ni=21&no=4&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=12tm74rmr&sigb=12pmut9bg&sigi=11p3f9gni&.crumb=kwIpEac5dhr&
The monster was made from dead parts of other humans, where as..........hang on a minute you've got a point there!
I actually can appreciate almost all types of stamps especially those stamps with historical figures on it. I have not found one yet that I considered ugly.
.....and bug eyed. I have read his life story and like him, he was the last of England's great kings, but good looking he wasn't.
Yes, no doubt he was a great monarch. Here are some stamps that were purported to be "ugly" stamps when they came out 10 years ago. They are a booklet pane of "space fantasy" stamps. What do you all think? I thought they were kind of interesting. http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=A2KJkK7ZJo9RURgAnEGjzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBpaWt1dXN1BHNlYwNmcC1leHAEc2xrA2V4cA--?back=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3Dspace%2Bfantasy%2Bstamp%26fr%3Dyfp-t-900-1&w=566&h=312&imgurl=home.comcast.net%2F~jmsanford7%2Fwallload%2F049s_-_Space_Fantasy_-_two.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fhome.comcast.net%2F~jmsanford7%2Fwallload%2Fwallload.html&size=73.9KB&name=%3Cb%3ESpace+Fantasy+%3C%2Fb%3E%28booklet+pane+of+five%29+booklet&p=space+fantasy+stamp&oid=4cac9bae5aad8e8faabea4ee79661d07&fr2=&fr=&tt=%3Cb%3ESpace+Fantasy+%3C%2Fb%3E%28booklet+pane+of+five%29+booklet&b=30&ni=21&no=39&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=11qbpf7ja&sigb=12ct4eq3k&sigi=124tgaakt&.crumb=7U7c9oyqmhg&
Here is an example of something I believe might be one of the last subjects that deserves consideration for a postage stamp. Having seen this what else is possible? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TJSPZHAMlOo/UUI7qfQJ5rI/AAAAAAAAF_Q/6JrayAszSCw/s1600/2013-finland-prettiest-outhouses-postage-stamps.jpg Here I present the loo commeratives...LOL!
That last answer gave me a good chuckle, thanks tu7. Did you like the "Space Fantasy" stamps? I kind of liked them and thought their tagging as "ugly" was a little unfair at the time.
I like the space fantasy stamps. They have character. The Loo Commemoratives may not be a trad. subject...but they're not ugly stamps. Interest designs and good photography. That one of the dog I thought was kind of cute. Certainly, not great art, but was a cute picture. There's a museum in Nova Scotia that has an "interesting" outhouse exhibit...should I try to find the link?? This all brings uop the obvious question: What are you defining as ugly?? The design? The image? the topic? Any of these??
Yes, I agree the outhouse pictures in and of themselves are not bad, it's the subject matter that kind of rubs me the wrong way. In the "bright eyes" set all the animals have those "dead fish" eyes. LOL! The dog, the cat, the parrot, the fish and the hamster all seem to interchangeable eyes. I guess it isn't always any one thing that makes an individual think a stamp is ugly, sometimes it's the art, other times the design and other times the topic. Call me old fashioned, but I think there are a host of individuals, landmarks, buildings, memorials and historical events that are worthy of a stamp before I would consider some of the subjects that host lots of stamps these days. Sure a link to an exhibit might give me a better perspective towards the Finnish stamps I posted. The folk art angle would be interesting. http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view;_ylt=A2KJkevcV5BRxzYAp.6jzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTBpaWt1dXN1BHNlYwNmcC1leHAEc2xrA2V4cA--?back=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3Dbright%2Beyes%2Bpostage%2Bstamps%26fr%3Dyfp-t-900-1&w=300&h=300&imgurl=ecx.images-amazon.com%2Fimages%2FI%2F517ay6gJPQL._SL500_AA300_.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBRIGHT-3234a-Plate-Postage-Stamps%2Fdp%2FB001HHDJ3A&size=20.8KB&name=1998+%3Cb%3EBRIGHT+EYES+%3C%2Fb%3E%233234a+Plate+Block+of+10+x+32+cents+US+%3Cb%3EPostage+Stamps+%3C%2Fb%3E...&p=bright+eyes+postage+stamps&oid=dcf3fbad9abd9cee5bf5340d91a70db4&fr2=&fr=&tt=1998+%3Cb%3EBRIGHT+EYES+%3C%2Fb%3E%233234a+Plate+Block+of+10+x+32+cents+US+%3Cb%3EPostage+Stamps+%3C%2Fb%3E...&b=0&ni=21&no=1&ts=&tab=organic&sigr=1259b9eoa&sigb=12j7o4o8k&sigi=11s5q3r2m&.crumb=baIMkLl.P/a&
Well, I searched some stamps with Edward the VII. He does not seem to be a handsome character but the stamps still look fine with me.
It's probably just down to taste really Sarah. I have never really been a fan of any 'modern' art. So garish stamps are never my favourites, this is getting quite intersting though, yes?
