Hi to all As a collector who does not focus on a particular country or theme, means i have the knowledge of a lot of stamps, and have collected a mass of reference book, to help me in identifying stamps from across the globe. But I still struggle with some stamps, trying to identify the country, colour, difference between coil and standard, phosphor or not, and on the USA stamps which Washington goes where within my collection. So I am suggesting that we use this forum to show each other scans of stamps we cannot recognise and between all members we may be able to find out where they belong in our albums, as I have a box full here I am eager to either place in my albums or put up for trade but do not have enough information to do either lol
Hey Steve, Over the years I have gotten pretty good with the US Washington Franklin Stamps. You do need a Perforation Gauge, watermarking fluid, and a black tray for watermarking. If you have any questions, send them my way.
hey guys, i need some help with this one. it's perf 11.5, and the watermark is 4 circles intersecting each other. can you help? i don't have the scott catalog to look it up. i believe it's hungary 20, but i could be wrong. View attachment 179
No you are not wrong it is Hungary Quite a early one but I dont have access to my catalouges right at this moment so can not give you the SG#
i am not sure how easy it will be to identify, but if the water mark has a 4 pointed star withing the space of the circles, then with the perf you gave, this would be a Scotts 1898-9 5k rose on yellowed paper 38a. View attachment 184 well that did not work as well as i would have liked lol
not sure if this is going to be as easy as i hope, but below are the USA stamps i can not sort, there are so many variations for these stamps, even using the SG catalogue for USA 2008 edition, i am still no better off View attachment 192
if i has a star, i can't see it. the circles come together like the olympic rings, only 4 circles instead of 5. thanks for the help!
Scotts no's are fine, as i have both catalogues, so once i know it on scotts i can then look it up on SG
Scott # First row 210 210 212 213 65 Second row ? 210 210 210 210 Third row ? ? ? ? ? The reason for the question marks is because it all depends if the paper is hard or soft and if the stamps have a secret mark. An excellent website to identify early US stamsp is http://www.theswedishtiger.com/usstamps/. Any more questions please let me know.
3rd down, first and second... Those are obviously the same design, but to get an exact ID you need to check for secret mark and grill. http://www.1847usa.com/1870/Banknote01c.htm
Top row, 5th over... That could be a #64 or #65, among others. If it has NO grill, it would be a 64 or 65. Then it comes down to exact color to decide between 64-65. The most likely is 65, but it's very hard to tell in some cases.
Some of those are VERY attractive stamps. That general series of stamps is harder than you would think to find so well centered as some of those examples. Quality control was not apparently a high priority in US stamps during that era.
2nd row, 1st and last stamps = very nice overall... great centering and perfs. The 206 has above average centering, though not totally perfect.
