Not sure if something like this is available, but I am looking for an app/website where I can create a catalogue of my stamps. Hopefully this piece of technology will show me which stamps I have and allow me to create an electronic wish list of what I am still searching for. Pictures of these stamps will definitely be an added bonus. Any suggestions?
Hi, try visiting this link and you might find what you are looking for. http://www.stampexchange.com/threads/stamp-albums.2871/
Thanks Zararina. The above is a great thread. This is however not entirely what I have in mind. I am looking at creating a catalogue of my stamps on my Ipad or computer. If I have to try and put it in words, I would like to: Mark my collection against a pre defined list. Note the condition, album etc. Mark items I want on a wish list. Etc. If the above have some pictures as guide that will be awesome. Not sure if my hopes are too high.
I'm not sure that you could find any links better than those in the thread above. Try them out, they're very good, and nice. Oh, and thanks Zararina for a friendly reminder of that thread.
You have a computer - ok Are your images on this computer ? Why not create an Excel file for any or all your stamps to any kind of catalogue or Country listing. link images in the file to your pc images. An Excel File (per Country or so) you can chop and change and could be called up where the net is available. Meeting a stamp collector on mount Everest does not mean you can use you ipad there, though I may even be wrong on that Nice avatar.
There are a number of stamp inventory programs out there of which I have linked a couple. The problem for me is that they cost money and require yearly updates which also cost money. I prefer to use Excel which may be a little time consuming to set up. Perhaps if I had thought ahead I might have used Access, this would have allowed me to generate want lists. Generally speaking I know what I need and if I don't I scribble a short list before going to a show. http://www.stampcollectorsdatabase.com/ http://www.ezstamp.com/
I see what you mean in terms of expensive! I have thought of the Excel route. I just thought there might be a nicer way to keep it in a more orderly fashion, making use of a database. Access is a good option, I however will have to up my skill a bit. You can easily create a want list in Excel as well, depending on your design you might be able to add a "want" under a "condition" field and filter on this. Philactica, not sure if I will ever make it up Everest, but my Ipad will be able to read an excel file. It will be without the images...
I would go the Access way if I had to do it over again. I did try a Scott stamp inventory program when it first came out. It wasn't bad, but it had limitations. Perhaps it was because it was a new program (I bought it in the first year) that I wasn't happy about it. Perhaps as I mentioned before I was unhappy they wanted more money to update it the next year. Whatever route you go it will undoubtedly be a compromise of expectations and results.
I had a Q&A DOS program from around 1984 based on SG, Scott, Michel & SACC, no pictures for African Countries. Technology advances too quickly so it became obselete.
That is an interesting idea about using Excel. I never would have thought about that. Thanks for the pro tip!
Philactica, you touch on another key point with the off the shelf package. The country selection is not always great. My interest is primarily in Africa, with a few packages looking at these countries. Maybe I am missing a trick here, but if you can create an online catalugue with a number of collectors stating their wish list and availible stock, you can create an electronic match which will be to the stamp collector community's benefit. I guess the commercial aspect has so far not been appealing enough. I guess it is off to update my Access skills.
Nice Excel idea. Well, it's sometimes easier than registering on sites / downloading apps and even cheaper. Thank you!
Interesting idea about the commercial potential of integrating dealers and collectors stock and want list inventories. I like the idea very much. The value of a commercial inventory program would certainly be enhanced by such a feature were enough dealers to be involved in it.
This will not just benefit the dealers. It will also benefit exchange programs. Where people will be able to match want list and surplus stamps automatically.
In theory the time cost factor is tremendous for stamps in the cent range thats is why Stamp Fairs, Bourses, Dealers at exhibitions allow collectors to select. In practice it works best when an exchange is proposed and Excel lists are offered to select from. Of course mutual rule are adhered to and if unsatifactory the exchange is stopped after the mispleasue is noted. Here is a sample of an offer list(not valid presently):- S. Oh dear, that Excel file did not copy and paste, but if anyone is interested send me your email address via a post and I will send you the same copy readable as it should come out.
You might try www.catawiki.com I've not used the full suite of functions available, but from what little I've posted there, it sounds like it could fit your requirements / desires.
I see that this site has some of the funtionality I'm looking for. I will play around and see where it gets me. Thanks Larry
I have checked out www.catawiki.com. Its a good site with a good catalogue. It is easy to add to a wish list, collection, etc. It also has an app although this is only in Dutch, so a little draw back on this. It also do not allow you to create a list of stock availible for exchange and match this to other members wish list. I have also found www.colnect.com. This site do have the capability to match wish lists with exchange lists of other members. This however seem to come at a price, although I am not sure how this works. It also do not have an app.
