Scott's 702 2c red cross mnh. Perf measures incorrect.

Discussion in 'United States Stamps' started by willard theodore frye, Jul 6, 2018.

  1. Perf should be 11x10 1/2 or 10 1/2x11 for commemorative rotary press designs. This is from 1993 BROOKMAN STAMP PRICES. Stamp that i have measures 11x11. I compared this to a Scott's 704 1/2 cent Washington stamp which measured correctly. Am I reading the book correctly and this is an error?
  2. I believe i have found the answer. Rotary press is 11x10 1/2 and flat plate is 11x11. Is this correct?

This is very interesting. I looked into four catalogs on this question. The Blackbook price guide to US Postage stamps (2015)(good book it will show if an earlier stamp plate was used on other stamps), Scott's 1840-1940 Classic Specialized Catalogue(2016) , Scott Specialized catalog of US stamps and covers (2017), Scott's Standard Postage Stamp catalog (1A, 2018) and the Brookman 2017 U.S. Stamp catalog.
The Brookman and Blackbook list the stamp #702 as a Rotary Press stamp with perfs at 11x10.5 and 10.5 x 11. The benefit of using the Blackbook it will show you there is another SC# listed for an image. Like SC# 557 (586, 602, 637), the other numbers could be coils or different printing types; only SC# 702 has no other catalog number related to that plate.

Now Scott lists # 702 as a Flat Plate Printing with perfs at 11.
This could be a mistake on Scott's part and with your perfs of 702 shows it could be a Rotary press stamp. Now you could call Amos Media and ask them for clarification, I have done it in the past, and they will get back to you within a couple of days and someone will call back with an answer or a "Song and Dance" at (937)498-0802.

    Hi Willard,

For the Red Cross issue Scott #702 the Scott catalog lists only 11x11 as the perf. That is a flat press printing.
  5. At it is listed as 2 cent red cross scott#702 flat plate perf 11. This is correct! Brookman and 2018 US/BNA cata lists as rotary press perf 11x10 1/2 or 10 1/2 x 11. Apparently they are in error unless there is another explanation. I have uploaded scan front and back. I believe this mnh stamp deserves a premium because cross appears in hand.
