I purchased a small stamp collection from someone, and many of the stamps are mounted on hinges in a book. What is the best way to remove them?
stick your tongues under the bottom of the stamp and ease upward, then leave the hinge on the stamp that is the best way to ensure no damage. If you are remounting simply stick the new hinge to the back of the old one. Or if it is a stockbook, slide both under the retainer [stamp and old hinge].
You can soak them in tepid water if you would rather not use your tounge, who knows what might be on a old hinge LOL (sorry couldnt resist it)
I have a device, I will have to look for to see if Lighthouse or Harris product. It is a plastic box about 50cm x 75cm and about 30 cm deep. A lid fits over the open top. There is a fitted piece of perforated plastic that separates the top part from the bottm, where a thin sponge is found ( bottom of box). In use, the sponge is saturated with distilled water ( no loose water). The stamp is laid down ( gum up) on the perforated plastic, and the lid put on top and allowed to stand for 15 minutes or more. The water makes the interior very humid and the hinge and stamp backing has their glue softened and they can be separate very easily. If the stanp is mint, and you do it carefully enough, sometimes it is difficult to see where the hinge once was. The stamp can be gently lifted from the perforated plastic and another inserted and the process can be repeated. If they are used, just wash the stamps. No hinge required with a slide-in Stockbook or mounts. Mint I remove carefully from the album and remove the hinge remainders carefully as best I can.and do never rehinge. Hinges are sacrilege to stamps - are we not more civilized ?
Agree with Philactica since removing hinged stamps require work and could be damaging. @Steve, you seems fed up licking stamps.
