don't know if i've shown this one before or not, sc# 537, akron, oh precancel. i wish the precancel centered better. View attachment 860
very nice overprints, i have not started sorting my Swaziland stamps yet, i have half a box full at the moment, i will need to get on with them one day ;-)
This stamp has what appears to be its original glue, so I assume that the "cancellation" is actually an overprint. Can anyone confirm or deny this notion? View attachment 1407
Nope it's 6 barred slogan cancellation. It was used to either promote air mail services or to show an airmail/first class rate . Could the stamp have been re-gummed by someone learning to re-gum? Or, maybe the stamp was simply taped to the envelope, as I have ran into that before. Good luck! Could you show the back please? Notice your cancel says "AIR MAIL SAVES TIME" here is a link I dug up for you about these- http://www.rmpldenver.org/pdf_files/2010julaugscribblings.pdf These ones are not exactly like yours but you'll get the idea anyway.
Hello Alvin, for your information, all cancels are technically overprints, and the adhesive on the back of stamps is gum, not glue. If it were glue the stamp would never soak off of the piece it was attached to.
Strange the way it has been pre cancelled though Swich, would that add value the same as a sideways watermark does on GB stamps? did you see the pre cancelled i have up for any one who collects them, (namely you lol) Steve
Position of cancels does not add value SL, with the exeption of very central CDS. imagine if it did the GPO would have some guy with a very steady hand trying his best to cancel absolutely vertically all the time [smiling here]
Thanks, Jay! Great file and info. The gum looks pretty uniform and original, but there is a corner where it's missing--perhaps just a poorly aimed lick that enabled it to be removed with most of the original gum intact; the corner where the gum is missing actually looks like it was stuck to another stamp, and forced free instead of soaked.
I'm glad you found it useful Alvin! Really neat too I love slogan cancels! Also on that link I gave you, down the page a ways is all about the US revenues and their usages ans types. Fascinating stuff!
this can be avoided by using water just about fresh from the kettle, slide the stamp off and then dry as soon as posible to save the fibre of the stamp getting too malleable, the gum should be just about tacky enough to stay on the stamp and not the envelope which is more porous. Do not be tempted to use lighter fuel it will attck the gum.
Yeah that's right it used to be a pretty common practice to steam stamps off cover leaving the gum but sometimes it get disturbed in the process. My grandmother used to have a little rack she made especially for steaming off stamps! I always thought it was interesting.
here is a little info on that stamp. It almost wasn't a stamp. http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/essays-the-stamp-designs-that-also-ran/
