Acquired this nice post card from the Post office with the Longest name... Posted at "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" Thats 58 letters
I guess that must mean there isn't a post office at Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu in New Zealand. Yes, it's a real name. I only know it because I remembered a late 1976 song "The Lone Ranger" by the UK band Quantum Jump. ~Peter
Nice trivia! I doubt if I could pronounce it well as well as memorize that. It will be great to know how they come up with such hard to remember name.
Haha so true. Its really hard to call out that name. I am sure most of the locals there would be having trouble to pronounce it even. Such a long name, makes it even more difficult to spell it LOL.
The name means: [St.] Mary's Church (Llanfair) [in] the hollow (pwll) of the white hazel (gwyngyll) near (goger) the rapid whirlpool (y chwyrndrobwll) [and] the church of [St.] Tysilio (llantysilio) with a red cave ([a]g ogo goch).
i have stood there as well in fact i do believe i have a photo somewhere of me standing there i was not waiting for a train though just went to see it while visiting the inlaws who were at RAF Valley lol
well there you go, i never knew that but does make it more interesting, and i did not see the whirlpool might have to take a trip back lol
Very interesting, but also very linguistically challenging! I'd love to visit Anglesey and more specifically Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.
I am reasonably sure I heard the train does not run anymore and the station has been turned into a little museum. Does anyone know if this is true?
