    Hi All,

Forgive me if this question has already been asked - or if many of you already know where to look....

I'm new to stamp collecting and wondering if there is a site/resource/magazine that has the total number of stamps printed by various countries? Why this question you might ask? Simple! I'd hate to start collecting and not be able to 'complete' the collection over the rest of my life...thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

In that case you should not start a collection. There several self-
evident reasons, why it is impossible to become complete. There is
no and will never be a complete stamp collection ever.

Almost all countries have at least a few great rarities which preclude purchase by all but the very wealthy. Also, numerous varieties of color, perforation, errors.

Prince Edward Island produced 16 stamps between 1861-1873 when it signed on with Canada. Even here, a couple pricey items and lots of varieties. Still, a complete set and even a few varieties might be had for around $5000.00.

I'd pick a country and focus on Commemoratives by year - perhaps beginning with your birth year or some other important date marker.

I have been collecting off and on for 55 years and I used to worry about value. That was the key way back when. Now I collect based on whether I like the looks of a stamp, topic or country. I love all stamps that have been issued even though most I just see in pictures.

Your question is more of I believe, I want the whole enchilada and that just won't happen unless you actually hit a few Mega-Millions or Powerballs and even then with so many variations and such you still probably would not a definitive complete stamp collection of everything.

That said you may need to set your sights on WHY you are starting to begin stamp collecting. What prompted you? What was that first stamp that you saw that said hey I want to collect? Stamp collecting is boundless and never-ending. You are in control as to what you want to collect. Do NOT listen to those who claim value is the most important thing. If that is your goal then you will be more worried about that then the actual love of collecting stamps.

Find something that you are interested in and focus on getting a good collection of that area without worrying about completeness. You can collect either by country or by topic. Many collectors nowadays collect a particular theme or topic rather than collecting by country, precisely because it is seldom that you can have a complete country collection. This question never arises if you are collecting a theme. There are many threads on this website that illustrate different themes or topics on stamps. If you really want completeness, then for a reasonably modest outlay you can have a complete collection of the old South African homelands that were re-incorporated back into South Africa in 1994. You can probably find a complete collection of those individual countries on eBay or from a dealer. But where is the fun in that?
