I bought a bag of 1 pound of worldwide stamps on paper. Wasn't expecting to find a stamp issued in 1897 though, nice surprise. Funchal was the capital of Madeira, a small group of islands off the coast of Africa. It is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal, the other being the Azores. They used overprinted stamps from Portugal for mail in the islands. More about Madeira stamps here.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postage_stamps_and_postal_history_of_Funchal
