May the Force be with you! According to Durland, lots of plates for 231. When I was dreaming about plating the Blackjack (73) several sources said not possible because printing techniques were by then too good. But both the books on the stamp - by specialists - seemed to think possible. They have plated the Jenny invert I think? You'll need lotsa stamps, blocks, strips and proofs. Quite a few auction catalogues on the Columbians but alas, the detail wouldn't serve to plate. Perhaps looking into Chase's work on the 3-cent would provide some guidance?
Thanks yes i am making it even harder by useing only broken hats lol According to a book I have It seams possible but has never been done. I started with a guide line, There will be 4 when they cut the sheet down, push the arrow ones will help lol, Yes the Jenny is plated. If you post one the experts can tell you the position it belongs. Its going to be tricky with the 231 I have to sort out the ones that were recut or reentered. I have blocks and multipoles, Plus pages with over 200 different positional marks through out Scott 231.
There were 4 transfer rolls that made the 16 reliefs, Matrix math perhaps LOL Once I find the pattern of the transfer rolls were used on the plates it should be easier to find the plate positions in theory
Sounds as if you are on the right path!! When I was thinking the Blackjack I tried to find a book on how to plate. Found a few articles but no book. Do you know of one on that subject?
Yes this stamp is incredibly hard to plate, There was so many changes going on nobody did it. I also like the black jack has it been plated? Maybe you should presume it. The thing i find the most difficult is finding expert info on the stamps. It is likely out there but it seams no one will help you find it. They tell me just come to the liabrary and search for it lol im Canadian and do not have a passport, although im a member to most U.S. liabraries and such I can not just drive over and research anything.I think now plateing is just math, My 150 iq can do math so ill plate 231 in just weeks, im thinking back 216 of my broken hates are plate 68, depending on relief tHE ONLY ISUES IS i HAVE FOUND NEW TYPES NOT RECORDED LOL So I start over new reliefs different plates and positions
I would look for articles in American Philatelic congress books and ask the APS library for info they charge but it is not much It might have already been plated, ASk Richard Frajola on his sight they will know.Im no longer a member there I typed too much to his liking. LOL I guess finding missing boat files from 1702 thought to be lost forever was not enough to stay a member there lol see i type too much he does not like that.
The reliefs tell you wear the plate is, left 13 right 13, position or plate13. There are missing reliefs with this stamp or maybe i have already found them, the 15 stamps with the new not recorded relief breaks. maybe i got lucky, the book even says that it could be possible to plate an entire sheet of broken hats reliefs. but has never been done.

Sigh...at one time long ago I had 40-50 pages of Blackjacks like that one as well as some nice blocks and strips. I have one strip left is all. I also had a nice selection of Scott #153. I was recently planning to try the Auction Network - but then <DonSellos> talked me into buying a lot of expensive Nassau Street covers!
Plate 67 position 11LR Note the arrow To position the cutting of the sheets, top right wear the sheet was cut into sheets of 100.The out sides of the sheets wear perfed with a salvage edge attached to them.
Plate 67 position 5/6 top dead center 15/16. Note the dots on the 5th and 15th stamp, used to line up the transfer rolls with the plate.
Plate 35 would be a new find for broken hat types, This stamp has Broken Hat plus the lower right frame line broken.
