Hi Steve, et al, Has anyone in the group had experience w/ this gizmo. I purchased one recently and it reads the perfs w/ a laser (?). The problem I am finding is that 95% of the perfs it reads are not listed in either SG or Scott! I did get one stamp to read 'correctly' i.e. Gibraltar Scott 109b perf. 13.5. Any feedback would be well appreciated as after 2 weeks fiddling w/ this item I'm just about ready to call SAFE & make a return. Grrrrrrrr! HG (Not Wells)
i have been looking into the electronic perf reader, i found they are quite expensive around $500 and was wanting to kow if they were any good, as that is the hardest thing for me to do with my eyesight being the way it is. please let me know which model you picked up, so i will know not to buy that one
Funnily enough I have been watching one that finishes today on Ebay, but asking around it appears that they are not too relaible. I have marked up a card with a series of lines which show the distance over a number of perfs _ only been using it for a few days, but seems to be good for most I have measured Bionic
fine if you have 20/20 vision at my old age you improvise as required, besides if doing 400 to 500 at a time a perf guauge is very slow After that I use the Degram magnifyer with measure
i am not that old, but diabetic so some days my eyes can just about read a scan let alone a perf guage lol
I am sure you will resuscitate that idea once you are confronted with an optional value of a stamp of 50p or £150.
Hi Harry, If your eyesight is still good I recommend the Instanta Perf gauge as issued by your local S. Gibbons outlet. It is like a Stradivarius you need to use it. It is easy to read and spot on. Also allows yiou to choose if it should be 12.5 or 12.65. Catalugue are at most to the nearest 1/4 (12.25) Once you have sorted a series of different perf of a Country you get to grips with it. I can tell if a stamp is perf 14 or 12.5 by plain sight but a perf gauge can make a common stamp a rarity. Some post war German stamps are good practice or KGVI Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika. Erich
Ah not that reminds me........... About 3 years ago I was offered a job lot of stamps with various other items in a series of boxes, which I happily snapped up. In one of the tea chests I found a series of paintings and old violin in almost mint condition. Being ware that the recently departed owner was an avid collector of antiquities as well as philately - I sought expert advice I was informed that I had a Stardivarius & a Constable According to the expert ...................... ...................... Stradivarius could not paint and Constable made lousy violins
A Stradivarius in almost mint condition best to take it back to the expert and hit him over the head with it. There is no such 'thing' as a Stadivarius in almost mint condition - A Constable, very likely another false note. Sounds like a Night at the Museum But then if you believe it - believe it
Philactica, I think you missed the punch line perhaps ???? Quote :- Stradivarius could not paint and Constable made lousy violins
I was informed that I had a Stardivarius & a Constable Yes but what I want to know is; who was 'Stardivarius'?
Indeed, your 'expert' had a good sense of humour. Not uncommon at all for 'pipe dreamt' stamps to be traded in for a Porsche. Will someone please tell me when the next QV new issue will be available and where - I have a Ferrari in my sights ?.
A Stardivarius is an instrument similar to a violin less inteligent people refer to, (sorry bionicbelly - came straight from the gut) others may call it a Stradivarius, after the name of the man who made them. Unles you want to paste stamps on a violin this off topic and should be in general discussions. In addition, I would not know the name of the constable
Hi Erich, Thank you for your response. I take it then that this new 500$ toy is of no use and can easily be replaced w/ a SG Perf. gauge! (Que Lastima`) One would think that the German manufactures could make this PerfoTronic2 a little less 'perf-fect' ,so it would read-out numbers closer to what is listed in the catalogues. Perhaps it's just me and my inability to 'climb' this learning 'Curve/mountain' Seems to be mighty tall order now, but who knows, I may buy the SG gauge and do a comparison. I am, however, surprised that no one else has reported on using one of these. Ta, Ta, from Texas, Hg2
Steve, I recommend reading Erich's post below and eschewing the PerfoTronic2. It's a good thing blowing 500$ will not bankrupt me. Regards, Harry
