Let's see some pictures of some old Post Offices. I find these fascinating. In today's world, communications with family & friends can be, and most of the time, is instantaneous. However, there was a time when a trip to the Post Office was a journey of excitement, or maybe dread, depending on whom you received a letter from. Here's a pic from 1914. Got to love the pig wandering in the street.
Hello all a modern image (2015) of an old post office. Established in 1712 and claims to be the oldest working post office in the world. GPS - 55°"22'03.62''N - 3°55'24.54''W Sanquhar is a town on the river Nith in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Sanquhar Post Office, 43-45 High St Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway DG4 6DJ. Hello Gunny, A beautiful photo, I would like to see what is at this location more recently too! Regards, James
Hello Gunny, Here is my attempt at an old and new. But I have no idea if it's at the same map location. Would need more research. Am I close? Regards, James.
Here's one for you James. The old post office in Wiseman, Alaska has been sinking into the ground for the last hundred years. Here's a link to some interesting old rural post offices here in the states. http://www.inquisitr.com/1458901/check-out-these-images-of-small-old-rural-u-s-post-offices/
I usually go on Google Maps if it's a really small town, use street view, and see if I can find stuff. I haven't had time with the Silsbee Post Office but am sort of guessing that the building no longer stands. I have Wed & Thurs off so I'll see if I can sort anything out.
Hello H, Brilliant, I particularily liked the ptarmigan reference in Chicken, Alaska. We have some unusual place names in the UK, You may find the following link amusing. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/property/9334187/Whats-in-a-place-name.html Regards, James.
Hello all, for those of us into archaeology, history and pre-history, the following link may be of interest, it includes further links to other sites, videos and UK TV "Time Team" Series http://www.archaeology.org/exclusives?slg=wales-iron-age-hillfort-penycloddiau Regards, James.
I've pretty much seen all of the Time Team shows on Youtube. I watch BBC shows all the time as a matter of fact. There's another series about the Kings & Queens of England that is pretty fascinating as well. I'll check out your link to see what I've missed out on.
I love the old cabin type ones. There's one like that up in the mountains near where I live. The first picture is great too!
Found this one online. The photographer of this wanted to document the gradual disappearance of US Postal offices. More photos in the source link. source
Here's a picture of the Tokio, Texas post office in the 1920's. It reached a population of 125 residents in the 1940's before dying out.
Here is a Mule mail delivery team from the Plainview & Lubbock, Texas Post Office back in the day. Don't know if this is local mail route, or delivery of mail to another town. Appears to take 4 people to do it though.
