Have any of your favorite musicians had the honor of featuring on a stamp? One that comes to mind for me is Elvis. I know he was featured on the US stamp. Anyone have any others they know of? Doesn't have to be Elvis - I'm just interested to see other musicians on stamps!
There's also this Beatles stamp but it doesn't feature their faces. Just the good old yellow submarine! But I love the imagery they used!
Hello all, these from the USA or this one from Thailand celebrating Thai musician Euah Suntornsanan's birth centenary. Regards, James.
The USPS issued this Jimi Hendrix stamp. Loved his music as a younger. http://www.bonanza.com/listings/USP...&ad_type=pla&gclid=CObA5ZGOgM0CFUdlfgodHLsIgg
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct..._Handy&usg=AFQjCNHSzNxG855oNv_dXg2N6BtOm9Frvg I live just outside (20 miles to the TN - AL border, then about another 20 miles) of Florence, Alabama. Famous for the Muscle Shoals recording studio, and the annual W.C. Handy music festival honoring the subject of this stamp. BTW: Tuscumbia, Alabama is right there as well... birthplace and home of Helen Keller. Again, another annual festival. The Shiloh battlefield is in Adamsville, TN -- 20 miles west of Savannah, TN which is where my wife's farm is. The whole area is eat up with history...
I've been to Shiloh a couple of times, as well as read books about the battle. Been reading Civil War history for well over 30 years now. Shiloh was nice in that it wasn't coated in monuments like at Gettysburg. Gettysburg is too commercial. I'm moving to the Savannah, Ga area when I retire and will be visiting it again.
I must have been living in the dark ages! Or maybe my country just doesn't publish a lot of stamps dedicated to musicians (or at least ones I have seen or that are in my collection!) Looks like I need to keep a better look out!
The interesting thing about Musician stamps is that some musicians are internationally known but others are "only" known at a national level. Of course stamps are national and therefore both the internationally and nationally known are equally worthy of being on a stamp. For example, I am sure that France and Italy have many famous musicians on stamps...but necessarily few...like Edith Piaf or Pavarotti have a profile in the parts of the world that are English speaking. Additionally fame thru being a musician is largely due to the invention of recording music which increased the number of people who could actually "hear" the musician. So its largely a 20th century thing....which limits numbers. And understandably postal administrations have always been slow to put living people on stamps....I still think it is not right to have living people on stamps. I think we should also be careful about showing approval for lifestyle choices (drug abuse) The elevation of some rock stars (or athletes film stars ) to the level of heroism needed to be on a stamp with your country's name on it is uncomfortable for me. Sooner or later, reality TV "stars" will be on stamps.... Necessarily the musicians from early 20th century are dead and as the folks we heard in the mid 20th century are now dead or dying, they come into our stamp albums....in most cases quite rightly. These are just some random thoughts. I am not at home at the minute but later today will post some images of Irish stamps....including U2, Van Morrison.
i agree with you for example, in Croatia music related stamps are regarded to classical music, not popular pop, rock, etno music. btw if someone is interested in Croatian music stamps, here is catalog od that theme: http://www.posta.hr/default.aspx?id=744&fyr=&pojam=&teme=7
@zazarina, this stamps that you posted bring to me mind stamps that were published by German magazine named Bravo. Some od 'Bravo stamps' were these: etc. i never undestood te meaning od these stamps... i had some but during the time I lost them. (they never published musicians I loved to listen)
In a "previous life" I lived near Baltimore in Westminster, MD...upper Carroll County which borders the PA line. Lived about 2 miles south of the border and used to visit Gettysburg... WAAAY too many people at times and I am not a 'crowd' person. Liked the town as well but too commercialized... similar to others I have lived near (Tombstone, AZ being one).
If you come back out to Shiloh, give a shout. I will be moving back that way again in a couple of months.
