Hi all, here is a mini sheet issued 1989 showing HMAS Sydney (light cruiser) and SMS Emden. In 1914 this was Australia's first victory at sea by a warship of the fledgling Australian Navy, against the German light cruiser SMS Emden, near the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Emden was on a communications station at Direction Island, and was the fir st to fire. However the Sydney's more powerful guns resulted in the Emden's surrender, and beaching on the North Keeling Island reef.
"Großlinienschiff" (battleship) "Friederich der Große" was one of the warships, where in 1917 revolts against the bad treatment of the crews and for ending the war took place. It was suppressed by the admirality and two leaders of the protesting sailers,Max Reichpietsch was one of them, were courtmartialed and excecuted.
<WERNER> What was the huge ship the German's launched towards the end of the war and - because it was so large and maneuverable - it was sank (or nearly so) on its maiden voyage? (At least as I recall the story.)
