I wondered how common is snail damage to mail? I've just done a search on the net. apparently it is not uncommon. My brothers letter was about 6 years ago after an unusually wet summer and a huge proliferation of slugs and snails. I thought that it was the glue that they were after, but I now believe it is the paper. Following is a 2014 letter from Exeter Post regarding snail damage. And a post from Dr. chandrashekhar phadke said... Hello, I am from India. Recently, I collected an African Land Snail. It feeds only on cellulose paper. I provided variety of food like banana, papaya, cucumber and even proteinaceous cat food. However, the snail does not eat anything other than paper. It is surprising. The strong cellulolytic activity may be due to the cellulase secreting bacteria in the digestive system of the snail and is of research interest.
