That is an interesting bit of history. I'm not sure how I can incorporate that into a common conversation, but I'm happy to have learned that haha. Keep up the good work!

Hello Hochstrasse, do you have any example images of stamps.com labels? Do they differ from the Pitney Bowes labels?
    Regards, James.

I have some covers that have been sent to me that I have kept. These labels above are from the stamps.com website.

As you can see the Pitney Bowes labels are somewhat similar, they also have some machines that also print the barcode like stamps.com.
Since they all must conform to USPS criteria they are quite similar. Zazzle also falls in that category.

    Those are interesting covers Hoch.
I have received any of those covers and might have in the future.

Hello hoch, the zipcode tweaked my curiosity so I googled it. It seems to cover quite a large area but tiny in comparison the postcodes here. My postcode here is 77110, it covers an area of about 2000 square kilometres, almost useless in my opinion. My UK postcode is RM6 4?? it covers about 30 dwellings. I digress, back to labels.
I checked back through my recent post only found 3 labels and 28 UK stamped envelopes.
These are fairly typical of business labels.

    Some have company logos.

Obviously demands for money, they find you no matter where you hide:)

This one is one printed in the post office . Note the security tabs and the Machin image. Size is 60x65mm
This label was posted in the Twickenham area. TW17

Very interesting meters and labels from the Royal Mail. Yes, the zip code depending on how complete it is really nails an address. Our zip plus four plus two is almost a GPS location. Most people simply address the 5 digit zip code or at best the zip plus four. When the bar code is printed at the processing facility it adds the remaining digits in bar code form.

Very interesting to see those current printed labels and stamps from the Royal Mail. :)

Because of the business I am in, I get similar labels (2D) from trade show promoters and suppliers that will feature products there... seems like the Japan shows are a majority of them.

Its almost a shame that mail still gets lost here in the US but it still happens...

Mails also getting lost in here and not sure where it got stranded or someone got interested on keeping it. :p

I have received envelopes here in San Antonio without stamps...

In the US, it is common to mail to collectors using older mint stamps as postage, so I suspect SOMEONE in the chain has wanted to keep it... easy enough to moisten the gum with steam and then peel off the stamp. I have also received mail with slits in the bottom of the envelope to 'snake out' any stamps that might be loose in the envelope.

Because there are so many hands on the mail from here to there, it is difficult to indict any one specific system, but the fact remains: no post office that I know of will mail a piece without at least an undervalued stamp on it. Thankfully the events have been random enough to not cause TOO much concern, though it does tend to piss someone off when they are taken advantage of.

Yes, I'm amazed at how often I have to deliver mail to my neighbors or return to the post office when it is miss delivered. How does a carrier miss the address printed right on the envelope? :)

At the risk of sounding 'old school': we call it lack of 'give a damn!'...

The latest generation is being characterized by the "what's it going to get for me?" syndrome... no input for expected unlimited output. Might make a few folks upset with the stereotype but remember that my company employs a lot of younger folks and that is the general idea of most of the applicants that we see.

Yes, it's kind of sad. I suppose I'll never understand it, for me it was always if I was going to do something I always tried to put my best foot forward and do the best I could.

Anyway besides being Lincoln's birthday today it is also the birthday of General Omar Bradley.

Here's a "reality TV" show just beggin' to get made: Omar Bradley, Ollie North, Patton, and MacArthur vrs the team presently in the Middle East!! That would be a hoedown for sure....!!!

Without a stamp in the envelop definitely indicates it was taken off from it. Sad that even stamps on covers are being stolen, but at least not the whole cover/mail. :p

Hello, I once received a letter from my brother who lives in a very rural area. The postman had written on the envelope 'stamps eaten by snails'. There were traces of gum on the envelope but no stamps. I do not know if this is a common problem. Obviously my brothers local box must have had a snail colony? There was no excess charge on delivery.
I just thought, is this why the call it 'Snail Mail' :)

I wonder if there are snail traces on cover that gave the idea to the postman why the stamps were gone. :p

There were no snail tracks on the letter by the time it had gone through the system.
These are photo's of a couple of typical rural post boxes in the UK.
This one in a dry-stone wall, watch out for the stinging nettles!
