    The prohibition on mailing contraceptive articles or items containing ads for contraceptives was lifted today in 1971.

    I had never heard that there was a ban on this. Of course, I was only 11 in 1971.

    horseless age, lol! it looks so weird without the horses on the carriage but I have seen this is many photo images from history papers.

    Our postmen still deliver by walking or using bikes now but up until recently they would depend on hitchhiking lifts from strangers...I think the post office finally felt that was dangerous and allowed bikes for travel to get the post to the destination in the same week.

    Inaugural airmail service began between Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico today in 1929. The service was operated by Pan American Airways.

    Today in 1673, a mail rider left from a fort at the lower end of Manhattan with first regularly scheduled mail for Boston.

    That is a cool and interesting fact... I have been studying postal history and that is something I haven't run across yet. Thanks for the fact!!

    I am getting this information from a couple of different Twitter feeds I subscribe to. One is @postalnews from www.postalnews.com and the other is the Smithsonian's @postalmuseum. Therefore, I'm pretty sure that they are legit facts.

    Today in 1812, a river steamer carried mail for the first time on the Mississippi river, traveling from New Orleans to Natchez, MS.

    American Airlines flew the first jet-carried regularly scheduled transcontinental mail today in 1959, connecting New York and California.
