Good advice. I've read, more than once, about immigrants not allowed to leave places of "employment", usually houses of very rich people. There probably has been slavery since the beginning of time, and probably will be until the human race goes extinct.

Today one hundred years ago Coca-Cola patented it's distinctive contoured bottle. Here is an interesting stamp/label from Germany.

Hello Gunny, I too remember a number of cases in the UK, One Indian man was paid by a farmer to recruit labour to work on the farm to clean and pack vegetables for the market. It was only discovered when British Customs and Immigration received a tip-off they found out that the workers were being paid only 25% of the UK minimum wage, their Indian supervisor was pocketing the rest of the money.

They believe that there are about 14,000 slaves in the UK at present.
One woman was rescued after 30 years of slavery in London (2013).
A link to recent cases below.

Alarming to know that slavery still exists until recent times and in such huge number.

In the United States, Gideon Granger was named Thomas Jefferson's Postmaster General today in 1801, ultimately becoming the longest serving Postmaster General to date.

That post really alarmed me about slaves in the UK, how is it even possible that this can continue to go on? I mean, what with the way things are now I don't understand how it can happen.

Hello Atanas, in the UK we have a very free society. I live about 12 miles 20 km from central London we rarely see policemen, if I see police about I get suspicious, I think something is happening locally. We do have volunteer police, local housewives and men, they are supplied with a uniform, a bicycle, torch and a radio. They patrol the streets and chat to the elderly and ask children why they are not at school etc. I live halfway between two large towns of 250,000 people, you will see police there or in the cities purely because of the population size. All our towns and cities are well covered with cctv so that our relatively small police force can get quickly to an alcohol fuelled incident when the disco's or public houses close. Generally our police are unarmed, but we do have armed responce police who can be called upon if needed.
These slave owners are often quite secretive mostly foreign nationals who may have had slaves in their own country. Many of the slaves are illegal immigrants or people who come in on student visas and overstay their term, or they work in their "Uncles" butchers shop or restaurant as virtual slaves instead of going to university.

Yes, most probably those who are into slavery are illegal immigrants and have no choice but to work with very minimal salary in order to survive the place.

When I was in Germany (military, 5-1/2 years total over there) I would see cities with 750-yr anniversaries and even older. Had a lot of learning over in Europe during those times... at that time I was not collecting postal history but DID manage to collect a few coins. Pity that I wasn't more enlightened at that time...

Yeah, the U.S. isn't even a teenager yet compared to how long some other countries have been around.

It will be a good thing to know if that cancelling machine still functions or can be used until now. Machines made before were usually almost lasts a lifetime.:)
