You'll do alright. I went from owning no stamps, to owning about 200 in about 3 weeks, lol. Give it time, and start with inexpensive stamps with combined shipping. I bought over 50 stamps on BidStart for under $4.00 shipped. :O

i had none when i started. even now, i don't consider myself to have experience. it's one of the many joys of this hobby... there's always something new to learn.

  7. That's good. We should all be learning something new everyday, no matter our age!

Look at it this way VC, you have more experience today than you did yesterday and a whole lot more than if if you have never joined (or actively searched out information!)!

I should scan the 2 pages in the Scott's catalog about how to grade and determine condition of your stamps for you and/or everyone. That might be helpful.

That's wonderful advice! Very true for me too and I suppose just about everyone!

Here is priceless information on grading your stamps and a bit about how to properly utilize your Scott's guide.

If you would like to know more please let me know. Like paper types, watermarks, types of separations (perforations), Soluable inks AKA: Fugitive Inks. I could (If it's OK?) maybe post those excerpts if needed.

The "learning" part of this hobby is what keeps me interested. If you find you a good album ( like my Mystic US ), There is tons of info on the pages about every stamp. I'm sure you will learn something from reading it.

  13. True, no matter which hobby you do, you'll learn something. The good thing about stamp collecting is that it is longtime and can be rewarding in many ways

I have been stamp collecting for about two years now. I always thought that it would be an interesting hobby to get into. I saw an ad for a few stamps for a low price in an advertisement. They were from Mystic Stamp Company. I ordered the stamps, received my first package and have been hooked ever since.

No offense intend but buying stamps from big stamp companies like Mystic or Kenmore, etc.. is the most expensive way to go about it. Hang out here a bit and you'll get 100 X more for a fraction of the cost! Welcome Nichole and looking forward to seeing your stamps! -Jay

  16. Wow, I actually thought that if you buy stamps from big companies, then you actually save money. I never knew that, thanks!

Oh definitely, I was sent some stamps by Mystic which included a three piece "Overrun Countries" pack for $1.50 (they sometimes send you stamps to see if you want to buy them, and if you don't, you can send them back). I ended up going to BidStart and buying the whole set of 13 stamps for the exact same price. Needless to say, I let the Mystic set go right back.

The only good thing about Mystic Stamp is their albums! Their US album is the best priced album I've ever found

I actually just got a bill from Kenmore for 7.00! I have no idea what for but I know how to rid one of these "plagues of philately"..send them the measly $7.00 with a note that says any correspondence from this point on will be treated as unsolicited mail ()which means if they send you any more stamps you get to legally keep them and not pay for them!
