So, you've got a bunch of stamps, loose. You need to get them in your book, whether album or stockbook...you also need to record them (or should, anyway) How do you go about doing this? Do you record as you put them into your book? Sort and organize them, then document or some other method altogether? Let's discuss!
First I organized by country, then I organized them by catalog number oldest first, then I created a spreadsheet (catalog number, description, quantity mint, quantity used, value mint, value used, total value and cost basis columns. In the first step I put my stamps onto stock sheets by country. Then I organized them consecutively. If I had an album for that country with an empty space then I pulled and mounted the stamp while I was arranging the stockbook. Then I entered all the stamps into the spreadsheet while viewing the albums and duplicates. This is what I did initially. Obviously now I don't have to do all that. New purchases usually go into the spreadsheet first, then a put them into my albums or binders depending on what the new items are. If I want to design albums pages and display a particular country my stamps are already sorted and I can choose the best stamp to display if I have more than one of a particular issue. This has worked for me, but in no respect is any sort of guide for anyone else to follow. I do agree that some sort of inventory and cost basis should be kept by any collector with a yearly outlay for his/her collection.

My collection is in albums - my spares are in stock sheet pages / envelopes.The 50 or so albums are on bookshelves. I have a spreadsheet listing by catalog # / condition / catalog value(s) / several %ages of cat value to estimate replacement cost or potential sale price, but only for my main Canadian collection at this point. I desperately need to do the same for my US collection(s), but that's going to be an agonizing task that is perhaps best left for wintertime when I hunker down in the basement near an operating fireplace. For my world-wide collection I keep track (on a spreadsheet) of the # of stamps in each country, then by album, and then by bookshelf on which it is located. That method of bookkeeping allows me to keep track of where each county is in the array of albums. My yearly album supplements fill a 5" binder ~ every two years. So I buy and hold the supplements 'til it's worthwhile for me to 'break apart' the albums and (2-)post the new supplements to each binder. It takes 2-3 days of my time for that effort!
I only buy from reputable dealers. So the volume if my collection is probably much smaller than everyone else's. I have to say all my stamps are away.
I just started with buying stamps. I haven't worked on it yet I just put it away for now because I don't have a stockbook or album to put them in right now.
I think the technique I use for sorting mixtures is to start with the most general and go to the most specific. That is: sort first by country, then type (regular, semi-postals, airmail, etc), then catalog number. I mark my catalog for each stamp I have and then either mount those for which I have enough to make a creditable album page, or store them in catalog number order in stock pages to await acquiring enough to mount on an album page.
I really should get more organized, that is for sure one of my weakest areas. I really only organize by the country but after reading some of your guys posts it is making me realize I need to have a better organizational system!
If a person spends any amount of money in a hobby it is important to keep track of expenditures. A spreadsheet is a good way to track the cost basis of a collection. There is always the burden of taxes to be contemplated when and if a collection is disposed of.

I don't mark any stamp, but I often place a small piece of paper in the Vario stock page to indicate it's catalogue number. I put the catalogue number on a spread sheet with basis cost, number of used copies, number of mint copies, catalogue value and so forth by country. I think that is what people mean by cataloguing it. It's a way of tracking the collection.
