Hello all, this set depicting Honey Bees (Apis mellifera) from New Zealand. In the early 2000s there were 13 introduced species of bee in New Zealand. These included honeybees, alkalia bees, leafcutter bees, osmia bees and bumblebees. Honeybees The first honeybees brought to New Zealand were the Northern European black strain (Apis mellifera). The first of the yellow Italian strains were imported about 1880. Other strains came from Australia and America. Date of issue: 2013-07-03 Regards, James,
Hello all, more insects from New Zealand, on my 1974 visit to NZ I visited the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, Aranui Cave, Ruakuri Cave and Wangiwhitikau Cave systems. In New Zealand and Australia, glow-worms are the larvae (maggots) of a special kind of fly known as a fungus gnat. Fungus gnats look rather like mosquitoes, and most feed on mushrooms and other fungi. However, a small group of fungus gnats are carnivores, and the worm-like larvae of these species use their glowing lights to attract small flying insects into a snare of sticky threads. One species, Arachnocampa luminosa, is found throughout New Zealand, and others occur in Australia. Date of issue: 2016-03-02. This image from web, I have on order from NZ post. Regards, James.
"Red Forrest Ant",from a series of 4 "protected animals", issued Feb.16th,1962. (the scan shows, that it is not that easy to take scans from stamps in a binder)
Here are 4 stamps issued last year, on Australian Native Bees - there are more than 1500 different species, and in the main they are solitary and don't build hives, many next in hollows in the ground. Their honey production is very small, only enough to feed their offspring, and it is not honey that humans can consume.
