Just joined the group. Very new to collecting and do it for fun and relaxation in my retirement. Was happy to see I had one I could share.
Interesting stamp, Werner. It reminds me of the Allstate Insurance company advertisement "Are you in good hands? Don
The handshake was the centre of the emblem of the SED (Socialist Unified Party of Germany). It stands for the handshake of Wilhelm Piek, chairman of the KPD (Communist Party of Germany)(on the left) and Otto Grotewohl, chairman of the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany)(of the russian occupied zone only),what took place on the unification party conference in 1946. both samps issued March 31st,1966. In the western parts of Germany, the SPD refused to merge with the communists. In West-Berlin 80% of the SPD party-members voted against the unification. This was the only free vote about that matter. The founding of the SED was "promoted" by the Russians, but there was a widespread support in the (East) SPD as well. Piek and Grotewohl became co-chairmen of the new SED. In 1949,when the DDR was established,Piek became president and Grotewohl Ministerpräsident (prime minister). However the real power laid with the leadership (Politbüro) of the ZK (Central Comittee) of the SED and the first secretary Walter Ulbricht. Piek and Grotewohl remained in their postions till they died in 1961 (Piek) and 1964 (Grotewohl). The historic handshake, slightly looking stronger on a stamp, issued April 20th (Hitler´s birthday !) ,1971.
not sure why Gunny, but your photos never come out on my computer, just a thumbnail with a X over it ? Any ideas ?
Yeah, back in the day, I had my photos in an online server and just linked to them instead of uploading them to this site. Got tired of paying for the online storage, so when that account closed, the links no longer worked.
