Stamps from the 1500's..... must be worth millions!!! this link has been removed from the site where it was originally shown so does not work, i will not delete the thread as there are other comments, and they were quite amusing at the time this was uploaded. SL
Do your homework! j/k ( ) The Romans most certainly did have a postal system and before them the Greek! You know the post office's moniker "nor rain, nor snow...bla bla" came from the Greeks. There have been Both Roman & Greek "postal" type items found (clay seals and the like) but they are few and far between and most certainly not stamps as they didn't exist yet. A type of message seals in wax and such have been documented however I just woke up so go easy on me...lol
i'm not talking about postal items like wax seals, etc. i'm want a trajan 2 denarii definitive stamp!! lol.
I thought I will be seeing some real stamps on that page. LOL Definitely it will be bought by the museum first since it is historic.
I wonder how much one of those Greek stamps must be worth. Would anyone even be willing to buy one of those?
I don't know how many times I have learned that the Greeks or Romans did something long before us, so I am not surprised they had an organized postal system. The Greeks invented bikinis and chewing gum too, in case you didn't know. But I don't expect you'll ever see a first day cover from the ancient Greece, unless it's on Ebay and fake!
I think they was more of a cash-on-the-barrel type system and used wax seals of their ruler's mark or make. I don't believe anything like that other than documentation of it exists today. Think about it they had papyrus and some types of very high end and I imagine expensive rice paper from the orients but mostly and quite literally stone tablets like the earlier cuneiform styles and was probably sent by messengers on foot or horseback. so I sincerely doubt that their are any actual "postal" relics other than the clay seals to ever have to existed that far back. so basically unless that seller is proxy to that sort of thing then I have to believe the listing to be far reaching at best.
I'm kinda the opposite. I am actually really surprised that they had a postal system. And they made bikinis, that's crazy!
Why are you suprised that they had a form of postal service LOL just look at the size of the Empire and then consider how it was run The Imperial court had to send edicts and laws to all parts same as the Army did, then you had traders all would wish to communicate and Romans of wealth and station who would wish to saty in contact with the family Have a read about what they found in Vindolanda The largest find of of military and private correspondence all written on wooden tablets any were in the Roman Empire In reality the Empire coudnt have functioned without some form of long distance communication, they also had the forerunner of the Telegraph LOL
The more you look into the Roman Empire the more you realize what a great dynasty it was. The first European Union, a common currency, laws, and common language (Europe isn't quite there now). They found a device the Romans used to navigate the seas and at first they thought it was from aliens because it was so advanced and accurate. I have had the good fortune to walk the Appian Way out of Rome's Forum (the first highway), to visit the Pont du Gard (an incredible achievement in construction that is in perfect shape), and to see the famous bathhouse in.......Bath. I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone told me they had stamps and a postal system.
I would not guess when humans started a messaging system but mammals instinctively sent messages by marking their habitat terrain. So when next your dog pees against the irritable neighbour's fence he is just sending your thoughts or is that now telepathy ?
