Gold Foil FDCs from the USA What are they? I have seen listings for Gold Foil FDCs from the USA. What are they? And why issued? Are they a US oddity? Anyone know anything about them? Link to one of the listings below. I would point out the listing is nothing to do with me! 2010 USA 22kt Gold Foil Holiday Angel With Lute Stamp on FDC http://www.my-little-auctions.com/a...ith-Lute-Stand-on-FDC---25-&auction_id=189304
Bickerstonehall: I don't know where the gold foil stamps originated, but they don't appear limited to U.S. issues. In the U.S. they are not produced by the USPD, but rather by a private company(ies) that sold them as collectables. There is a bunch of them for sale on eBay on any day. I don't think there are many buyers though. I used to see them being marketed in Sunday newspaper supplements as investment material, bound to increase in value because of their gold foil application. Easy to buy, difficult to sell is how I would characterize them. My impression is that stamp collectors don't consider them as stamps and don't collect them. Don
Howdy Bickerstonehall! Don is correct. There are many gold foil stamps from a variety of countries out there. I personally have an album from Dominica of aviation firsts that someone gifted to me. It's quite interesting, but certainly not all that valuable. It's something most stamp collectors shy away from, as Don says they are not looked upon as real stamps (although they were hyped as such). https://www.ebay.com/itm/great-firsts-in-aviation-23-k-gold-stamps-dominica-/360429513375 Another Ebay listing for a first day cover book with 72 FDC's of U.S. gold foil stamps. https://www.ebay.com/itm/A848-72-U-...d=371698873089&_trksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982
