Werner: Once again, very fine to extremely fine centering. Difficult to come by in 19th century stamps. Don
Hello Werner, because everybody has been quoting Scott numbers, I thought that I might invest in a catalogue, I found a Scott 2009 V1 to V6 on DVD on Ebay. I have just started using it but I am finding it quite difficult, I have to learn all the "shortcuts" to find what I want, it's a lot easier scanning through paper catalogues though much more expensive. Regards, James.
Hello all, I bought the New Brunswick stamp in 1960 for the princely sum of 2/6. about US 50c then, and one of my reasons for buying it, was because the QV image looked like my girlfriend (but without the Crown and Diamonds) The dealer said it was 100 years old, and it still lasted longer than Jennifer. James.
I wonder what the price might be. My "paper-Scott" is from 1990 for "world" and 1996 for US and Br.Commonwealth. I have also the 2009 edition loaded down, free of charge, thanks Mssrs.Mega-Upload.
Hello Werner, I paid less than $7 for my DVD edition inclusive of postage. Regards, James PS my favourite catalogue is my 1912 edition of SG GB and Commonwealth. It cost 2/6 then.
Some more, where I have one or two only: Serbia,1860 Nova Scotia,1860 Sarawak,1871 Mecklenburg-Strelitz,1864 The Grand-Duchee issued six stamps only. New Zealand,1871 Antigua,1863 Prince Edward Island 1872 & 1862 Sao Thome e Principe,1869 Van Diemens Land,1857 (renamed later as Tasmania)
Finland,a grand duchee till 1917,when it gained complete independence. The grand duke or grand prince of Finland was the Russian Tsar. Januar 1st,1860 Cancel + pen-cancellation are normal for this stamp.(Russian curreny) Dec.1866,Finnish currency Stamps are rouletted. The long "tongues" are delicate,so undamaged specimen are rare. 5 different types of rouletting exist. 1866,with two shortened tongues.Such stamps value about 50 % of an undamaged specimen. Aug.8th,1875,perf.11.(not to confuse with the (expensive) 32 P.stamp from July 1st,1875, perf.14 x 13,5) Although issued after 1870,I have this stamp in my classical collection.
The early stamps of France look to me like the impersonations of classical stamps. If there would have been stamps in the Roman Empire, they would have looked the same,I think. First Ceres issue (set of 7) of 1849/50 President Louis Napoleon 1852 (set of 2) Empire,Napoleon III,without laurel wreath, 1853/61 (set of 10) same set,20 C.Type I and Type II Same perforated,1862/72,(set of 6) Napoleon III with laurel wreath (set of 8),1862/70 The last stamp for today,is one of the "dream stamps" of mine, when I was a young boy.My father had an illustrated world-wide stamp album. The first page showed some of the precious classical stamps and their prices. As the album was from 1923,the prices were enormous.Millions if not billions of Mark. But of course,it was the time of the great inflation. But what would I know about the value of money in 1923 ! One of the stamps of that page was the following 5 Fr. of 1869: So one dream fullfilled. To be continued...
France continued: issued Dec.,1870 (set of 3) When Louis Napoleon became prisoner of war by Prussia, the monarchy was abolished and the 3rd Republic was established. The stamps of 1849 were reissued, now perforated. The new republic refused to capitulate. The war dragged on.Paris was besieged for more than four months, before it fell and Prussia and her allies of Southern Germany had won the war. During the siege of Paris the Government fled to Bordeaux, where the following stamps were issued: Bordeaux issue,Nov.13,1870/1871 (set of 9) Unlike all other Ceres stamps, what have necks shaded with points, the necks of the Bordeaux-issue are shaded with lines.
France continued: 1871/1873 neck shaded with points, 10,15,25 C. small numerals 1872/1875 larger numerals Postage Due Stamps: 15 C.,issued Jan.1st,1863 25 C.,issued Sept.1st,1871
France, final part: issued 1859/65 (set of 6) This set and the following were issued for use in all French Colonies, except for Algeria and Tunesia, what used stamps of France proper. 1871 three stamps were issued: Napoleon with laurel 1872 a 5 C. stamp was issued: Napoleon without laurel Issued in December 1871 (also 10 and 20 C.) The 40 C. exists in two types 1872/77 (set of 6),15,25 C.small numerals 1872/77 large numerals (also 10,15,80 C.) The colonial issues are all imperforated and show the shading with points on the necks. Some are similar or even identical to the stamps of France and can be best destinguished by the cancellations. Here ends classical France. The following issue "Peace and Commerce" is the begin of the "Semi-Classicals",as they are called in France.
Hungary: Lithographed, issued May 1st,1871 Have one only from the set of 6 Engraved, issued 1871/72 This scan shows nicely the difference between the lithographed and the engraved stamps. Centering of both sets usually is poor to very poor.
Inspired by Makanudo, here my classics from Sweden: issued July 1st,1855 4 Sk.in different tones There are four more stamps (3,6,8 and 24 Sk.) in the set,all pretty expensive. The 3 Sk. normally blue-green exists in the colour of the 8 Sk. yellow-orange.Only one stamp exists, the most expensive stamp from Europe, ever sold. In 1858 the Riksdaler remained, but was no longer made up by 48 Skillings but from now on by 100 Öre. 5 Ö.green, issued 1867,5 Ö.yellow-green,issued Jul.1st,1858 12 Ö.blue, issued 1858,12 Ö.ultra-marine,issued 1861 24 Ö.dull-orange,issued 1866,30 Ö.issued 1858 (?) 50 Ö.carmine-rose,issued 1860 The is one more stamp in this set,the 9 Ö. red- or blue-violet. Issued Dec.1st,1862 17 Ö.,20 Ö. issued April 1st,1866 There are two more stamps for local letters within Stockholm,(no value expressed) 1856 in black,1862 in yellow- to olive-brown With the above shown issue (in my opinion) ends the classic era of Sweden.
Patrimonium Petri (Papal State) A few days ago zevrap 99 showed some later stamps from this country.I have stamps of the first issue from 1852 only: 1/2 Bajocco,3 Baj. 1 Baj,7 Baj. (both stamps were taken off the peace for examination and later refixed with hinges) 4 Baj.,5 Baj. 6 Baj. (missing 2 and 8 Baj.) The 1/2 Baj.is expertised, the others I hope a genuine, but I am not sure.
Austria First issue of 1850 1 Kreuzer yellow missing There are two different papers: hand-made and machine-made. Hand-made paper has a sheet-watermark.However only 4 or 5 stamps in each sheet of 60 show parts of the watermark. Sheets of 60 were printed, because 60 Kreuzer made one Gulden. The sheets were printed 8 x 8,leaving a surplusof four fields. One these St.Andrews Crosses were printed.Single St.Andrews Crosses cost a few hundred bucks.Stamps attached with an Cross are expensive to very expensive and can cost around $ 10.000.- continued...
The 3,6 and 9 Kreuzer are inexpensive. So specialists can look for different types etc. All stamps exist in two (I and III),the 9 Kr. in three types. Here Type I (9 lower than Kreuzer) and Type III (9 and Kreuzer on the same level, the outer frame line of the coats of arms shows a double line, while there is a single thick line on Type I and II.) There are a number of subtypes, like differences in the space between the 9 and K.
