Circular Date Stamp (circular postmark), generally contains the ciry and state of mailing as well as the date and time the postmark was applied. Here are the ones I have collected. I just collect the ones from the state of Louisiana. Any other collectors of CDS????? View attachment 1625
i have thought about collecting them, just not sure to what extent i would. still, i think they're cool. you have some nice ones!
Post #6 That is what I like - well centred, not perfect but good perfs, clear and neat Roswell postmark- date and time. That is a good example of what can be collected of that period - congratulations.
Well for those who do not know - New Mexico has always been the experimental Rocket center of the US starting with R. Goddard. View attachment 1639
Just a suggestion . . . Although there was a time when postmark collectors routinely collected cancellations on two inch by four inch pieces cut from covers, the accepted practice now is to collect the entire cover. My avatar, for instance, may look like a "cut square," but it is actually digitally cropped from the whole cover.
For anyone interested in collecting postmarks, check out the Postmark Collectors Club. http://www.postmarks.org/
Yes indeed, the postmark is today as important as it was even before 1840. The problem as before is space and keeping the cover in good condition. Even today some just want to cut-out the stamps - oops there goes another 1930 registered airmail cover.
I do not collect them but i have a few hundred if anyone else who does is interested, mostly uk and a few from around the world Steve
Thanks for the suggestion Robert. Most that I collect have been giving to me over the years. If I really like the cover, I will keep the whole thing. Thats the great thing about stamp collecting, we all collect stamps in different ways.
