Here are some San Marino stamps from 1956. Only a part of a large series:

Woof! I like this thread; love dogs!

We've always been chihuahua fans - tho we've had border collies and terriers as well. One of our chis - King Kamehameha 'Kameha' lived to be 18! They are fiercely loyal and protective of their owners.

The lower picture is of one of our current chis, Kanani - tho he has a touch of miniature pinscher in him. We also have Liliuokalani.

While not a real dog, I liked the McGruff Crime Dog issue, also issued in 1984 (September 1984 seemed to be a good month for dog stamps from the USPS). Among my favorites are stamps & covers featuring cartoon-like characters so I also purchased the McGruff first-day cover for my hand-illustrated covers collection when I saw it on eBay at a later date.

And here is another U.S. dog stamp. This one from 1979, Sc. 1787. The dog is what we call a German Shepherd, a very popular breed in the U.S.
