The Seto-Ohashi bridge is a complex of various bridges and viaducts connecting Honshu with Shikoku. Opened in 1988 the two story bridges have a motorway deck and a railway deck. The se-tenant stamps were issued April 8th,1988.
Hi all, I'm a new member from "downunder" (Australia) and I enjoy reading your threads. I can't believe however, that no-one has posted stamps of one of the most famous bridges in the world, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Attached are two stamps of it, one 1932 and one 2007. One of the most notorious stories about the opening of the bridge in 1932 is that, just as the premier of New South Wales was about to cut the ribbon to declare it "open", Captain de Groot arrived. He was not a member of the official party but, on horseback and dressed in his military uniform, he was able to blend in with the escort party of NSW Lancers. de Groot rode forward and drew his ceremonial sword, making to cut the ribbon and declare the bridge open "in the name of the decent and respectable people of New South Wales" de Groot was a member of a right-wing paramilitary organisation called the New Guard which was politically opposed to the more left-wing government and the socialist views of the state Premier.
Hello Betty, welcome to the forum ! The reason why I did not show the Sydney Harbour Bridge is my beginners collection of Australia. What I have (I collect pre-decimals and later ones only,if they are engraved) is from exchange only and often of poor quality. So I miss all valuable ones, very much the five shillings Harbour Bridge incl. Just two (poor) stamps from that set: upper the engraved variety of the 2 d lower the typographed version The 3 d and 5 sh. exist engraved (recess) only.
Railway-bridge,crossing Lake Templin not far from Potsdam. stamp issued Sept.21st,1976 from a set of six.
two more stamps of the same set, issued Sept.21st,1976 The Göltzschtal-Viadukt was also featured on a stamp of the re-united Germany, issued Oct.14th,1999.(see post # 11)
I can't visualize the utility of this structure. Doesn't look like a bridge. Does it carry water at the very top or middle level? Don
Hello Don, "The Göltzschtal-Bridge in Saxony is a two-lane railway-bridge. Built in 1846-1851 it is said to be tallest (78 m above ground) brick-built bridge worldwide." (This is my description from post #11) I prefere the DDR stamp to that of 1999,because it shows more the characteristics of a brick-building. In the net you can find numerous photos of this extraordinary bridge. Werner
