Pretty; very arttistic! But that is clearly not Jacques Anquetil...

    Hi Bob:

An attractive stamp, but you are going to have to explain that surcharge a little more for me. Does the surcharge make it a semi-postal with the five (centimes/francs?) going to a charity? What does the CFA stand for or translate to? And how does a French Metropolitan franc differ from a regular French franc?

    Thanks,

    Don

My ATF bike racer. First to win five Tours. I think a consensus is he is at least in the Top 3 with Eddy Merckx the best of all time.

    Don.....sorry I didn,t explain it better.
CFA stands for Colonie Francaise Afrique.
The CFA franc was introduced after WW2 with a fixed exchange rate with the French franc.
However,in Reunion, the CFA franc continued to differ from the French franc so the surcharged stamps were issued for use .To be perfectly honest,I know very little about exchange rates and devaluations.
I don,t think they are catalogued as semi-postals as the Scott numbers I have come across seem to be regular catalogue numbers.Gibbons also lists them as regular issues.

I see there are two books about Bicycles on stamps - and even a book on bicycle cinderellas.

Here is cyclist Tommy Simpson. His book, "Cycling is my Life" was one of the few books on bicycle racing in English in the 1960s. Tragically, cycling was also his death. He died during the 1967 Tour from a combination of the flu, altitude - and doping. But he is responsible for reintroducing bike racing to Great Britain which has since then produced many great riders!

Still searching for the rare and illusive "Horses on Bicycles" stamp. Not quite there, but getting close! :)
