The ones with the diamond jubille on them are current but the post office usually changes the color on the Machins 1sts when rates go up so they can tell the selling price at the time, I once used some 1sts from 5 years ago on a sase I sent to a friend and he ended up having to add some 7p stamps to them

Not in the UK Policediver, a 1st is a 1st
One can still use the very first 1st stamp and it is still valid for a 1st class stamp today

Why would my friend have to have added extra?? Could it be weight or oversize, or irregular shape???

We can't use our 1st as our early American classics (pre-Civil War) were demonetized so the confederates couldn't use them to spread their propaganda. So you can still use a Penny-black or 2d blue for legitimate postage? Neat.

No Jay, What BionicBelly was trying to say, is there 1st stamps are like our Forever stamp. Once you buy them you can use them for years to come, no matter what the increase of postage is.

Possibly the envelope size was Large as we have 2 1st class rates dependant on size

As for being able to use the penny black, I don't think you could even if you wanted to. Once the UK went to the decimal system I believe that after a certain time all the old stuff was no longer valid. Mind you, someone living in the UK would be more correct with that answer than I.

yeah I was just reading about them and they are quite like our "FOREVER" stamps and although wrought with problems both visually and monetarily they are just OK I suppose. Still have make up rate stamps for overages and now it's trickier to buy singles of the commemorative issues but otherwise quite handy.
