Fellow Exchangers, I have the opportunity to purchase a 16 page stockbook filled with early Commonwealth stamps (Victoria, Edward, George V) for the princely sum of £37:00. I am tempted to buy it and then make up some sets to put on Delcampe. What do you think? Would it be fun/a waste of money/good experience/other? Would anyone on here be willing to advise me on how to go about it and what to ask for, bearing in mind I have only been at this game a couple of weeks. If I buy, I could photo the pages for your perusal.
you could get it and then you would have lot's of stuff to both trade and familiarize yourself with other stamp areas. You should grab it just to have it anyway if you think it's worth the asking sum that is? Also keep in mind that sometimes the stockbooks are worth more than the contents so see if it has stuff you think is worth the price...I guess I already said that huh? ha-ha
I was promised £7:00 back if I return the stockbook to the dealer once emptied. So if I posted some 'made up sets' on here would you be willing to guide me on asking prices, on delcampe?
Hi west If you post some pics of the sets i can always lokk in the stanley Gibbons catalogue and give you a idea. If thats any help? David
This could be fun. So I bought the stockbook and though I could not get him to come down on the price, he gave me some free stamps from St Helena to go with them and also promised me a £7 refund when I take the stockbook back to him, empty. So I have photographed the first page and the St Helenas and want to know what to do next boys. Thanks in advance for your helpful advice. View attachment 2201 View attachment 2202 It looks like the stamps have been cherry picked, but I was assured what was left was worth the price I paid. Please be brutally hones if I have been ripped off. (there are another 15 pages though, so not yet)
West Your best bet is to identify each stamp and compare it against one of the sales / auction sites But it will be good practice for you learning about water marks, shades, errors and special perfs soem of thr Roos can be worth a bob or two, so look at them, but the bottom two rows look fairly common stamps, but I can not enlarge your pic for soem reason You will be surprised how quickly you pick up which stamps / countries to look for and identify the common ones quickly Hope that helps
Cor Blimey Guv'nor aint yer heard a Bob, it's a term for a Thomas tilling ain't it , yer know when yer had real money before this decimal malarky. back in the 50's you buy a "dicky dirt" for a Bob , with a new Whistle & Flute and a new pair of Ones and two's with some smart red Sara's i could go on the town for a few Brussel sprouts . The girls would take a "butchers" and I'll have a "Mervyn bragg" Then back in my jam jar after having a Johnny Cash , back to the carving knife, a quick loop the loop for supper and up the apple and pears to sheet street. In the morning I would feel a bit Moby Dick, so I's call kathy Burke and have a duck and dive, then down the bookies for a John Major A Bob = 1/- ( one shilling ) , 12 old pennies , now equivalent to 5p ~ but I think you may have other questions now eh ??
The only catalogue I have at the minute is Stanley Gibbons George V. So I do not know what the other stamps are. I am guessing I should break the pages up into sets and then get closer with the camera then, yes? What about the St Helena? Are they worth more than face value?
Can anyone tell me if these stamps are worth more than the prices printed on them? View attachment 2206
using Scott 2009 they range from $0.30 to $ 0.85 US for Mint and Used they range from $0.55 to $1.50 US
